Garage is a highly reliable S3-compatible object storage system designed specifically for operation in non-professional data center environments. The system employs a three-zone data replication mechanism to ensure data security and reliability. Its core advantage lies in its lightweight design—relying only on a single dependency-free binary file that can be quickly deployed across various Linux distributions. The system has low hardware requirements, supporting x86_64 CPUs and ARMv7/v8 processors from nearly the past decade, requiring just 1GB of RAM and 16GB of disk space, and adapting to network environments with 200ms latency and 50Mbps bandwidth. Built on distributed systems research including Dynamo, CRDTs, and Maglev, Garage seamlessly integrates with existing infrastructure and is compatible with the Amazon S3 API, making it suitable for scenarios such as website hosting, media storage, and backups. The project is supported by multiple EU research grants, ensuring its continued development.
