Google Invests in CO2 Battery Technology, Leading Clean Energy Revolution for Data Centers

Google recently announced its investment in Energy Dome’s CO2 battery technology, planning to deploy the first such battery at its Nevada data center in 2024. This innovative technology uses compressed carbon dioxide to store energy, achieving up to 75% round-trip efficiency and can be deployed rapidly within six months. The world’s first CO2 battery energy storage station has been built in Sardinia, Italy, with a capacity of 20 megawatt-hours, capable of powering approximately 3,500 households for a full day. CO2 battery technology requires no rare materials and can utilize existing natural gas power generation equipment, significantly reducing costs. As the proportion of renewable energy increases, long-duration energy storage technology becomes crucial, and CO2 batteries are poised to fill this market gap. Google’s move is a key step toward its goal of achieving 24/7 clean energy for its data centers by 2030 and will also advance the global energy transition process.
