This article delves into the core paradox in the development of AI companionship products: the difficult balance between providing realism and ensuring system controllability. The author presents two key contradictions: whether to adopt state machine management to ensure engineering control but reduce realism, or to allow free development to enhance realism but increase risks; and whether to pursue short-term growth with high activity and retention rates, or to build long-term relationships while facing model stability challenges. The article points out that AI companionship is essentially ‘managing loneliness’ rather than truly solving users’ social needs, an insight that holds significant implications for AI product design.
