German utility MVV Energie is building the world’s largest heat pump system with a total capacity of 162 megawatts, capable of supplying hot water to approximately 40,000 households. The system utilizes water from the Rhine River, drawing water through pipes with a diameter of 2 meters, and is expected to be fully operational by 2028. Denmark and Finland are also advancing larger-scale heat pump projects, with plans for 176 megawatts and air-source technology respectively. These projects demonstrate the crucial role of heat pumps in district heating networks, helping cities achieve their decarbonization goals. Despite high costs (such as the €200 million Mannheim project), heat pump technology is becoming an essential tool in the renewable energy transition due to its high efficiency and flexibility. The UK is also actively deploying similar systems, such as the 12-megawatt network at the University of Exeter.
