Open Source VSCode Extension: Cometix Space Implements Core Features of Cursor and Windsurf

This article introduces a VSCode extension called Cometix Space, which implements the core features of mainstream AI-assisted programming tools like Cursor and Windsurf. By analyzing Windsurf’s Codemap functionality, the author discovered that it essentially processes files locally through a local Agent and generates JSON data, with the frontend display not requiring calls to the original platform’s API. The extension is simple to install – just configure an OpenAI-format API key to get started. The author recommends using Cerebras’ GLM-4.6 or lightweight models to improve efficiency. Currently, Cometix Space supports both VSCode and JetBrains editor platforms, and the author plans to further port Cometix Tab to JetBrains and share an improved version of the Claudix tool. This open-source project provides developers with a more flexible and cost-effective AI-assisted programming option, while demonstrating how to implement core features of commercial tools through reverse engineering and optimization.
